Sri Lankan sinhala cinema in brief
Films made in the sinhala language in Sri Lanka are called Sri lankan sinhala cinema. "Broken Promise" is the first sinhala film in Sri Lanka. It premiered in Milan on January 21, 1947. This was jointly produced by S.M. Nayagam and B.A.W. Jayamanne. Then, in April 1947, the film "Ashoka Mala" was released. according to Rukmani Devi and B.A.W. Jayamanne become the first film stars in Sri Lanka. Also, the films "Lave Match" and "Arrogant Woman" were made during this era. The films of this early period were inspired by South Indian films.
Then, there was a special change in cinema. That is creating films with a sinhala infuence. Here, in 1956 Mr. Lester James Peiris directed the film "Rekawa". This is the first film to be shot in a normal environment in Sri Lanka. Later, excellent works such as "Kurulu Bedda", "Sikuru Tharuwa" and "Gamperaliya" were created during this period.
Joe Abeywickrama made his debut in Sri Lankan cinema with the artis production "Sarawita". Vijaya Kumarathunga was introduced to cinema through the film "Hanthane Kathawa". Malani Fonseka, who is known as 'the queen of Sri Lankan actress', made her debut in the film "Punchi Baba". Sriyani Amarasena, known as 'the innocent woman of sinhala cinema', joins the film industry in the film "Golu Hadawatha".
The 1970s -80s period become 'the golden age of sinhala cinema. That is, talented actors, actresses, directors, musicians and singers unite around sinhala cinema. Among the great directors of this time were Lester James Peiris, Dharmasena Pathiraja, Dharmasiri Bandaranayake, D.B. Nihalsinghe, and Wasantha Ubesekara. Actors and actresses such as Gamini Fonseka, Vijaya Kumarathunga, Ravindra Randeniya, Toni Ranasinghe, Robin Fernando, Malani Fonseka, Sriyani Amarasena, Neeta Fernando, Veena Jayakody, Swarna Mallawarachchi, Anoja Weerasinghe, who were full of acting talent, become popular and indispensable artist in sinhala cinema.
Even today, many excellent creations are gifted to sinhala cinema. Among them are 'Buddha Mata", "Rani", "Teja", and "Farmer's father". According to it appears that new and old actors and actresses are eager to work together to develop Sri Lankan cinema.
