Sri Lankan traditional dance

                    There are three indigenous dance traditions in Sri Lanka. They are the Up - country dance tradition, the Low - country dance tradition and the Sabaragamuwa dance tradition. These dance traditions are valuable heritages for our country. 


                The Up-country dance tradition popular areas are Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Harispattu etc. The main traditional Kandyan dance is Wes dance. The Wes costume is the main costume in this dance. The geta beraya is the main drum in this dance tradition. The kohomba kankariya is is the main ritual of the Kandyan dance tradition.

    The Law-country dance tradition popular areas are  Galle, Matara, Benthara etc. The main traditional Low-country dance is thelme dance. The thelme costume is the main costume in this dance tradition. The dewol beraya is the main drum in this dance tradition. The dewol maduwa is is the main ritual of the Low-country dance tradition.

The Sabaragamuwa dance tradition popular areas are Rathnapura, Kuruwita, Kalawana  etc.  The pabalu costume is the main costume in this dance tradition. The dawula is the main drum in this dance tradition. The pahan maduwa is the main ritual of the Kandyan dance tradition.
