Music is a major medium here. The name ballet joins the local art scene after 1930. Mr. Premakumara Epitawala started to introduce ballet as "Iginalu" due to the use of movement and Igi in expressing certain ideas. In the early stages it was influenced by India. After 1950, localism was changed. After 1956, it was inspired by western dramas.

In 1934, Rabindranath Tagore visited Sri Lanka and performed "Shapmochan" dance drama. This led to a revival of the local ballet art. In 1936, Shanthidevagosh started presenting the dance drama "Sitabarana". This is the first ballet produced in Sri Lanka.
